Resume of Nellie Abela.
Group 1 (Toy) and Group 6 (Utility) Judge.
Powerbulmas
Kennels began in Bullmastiffs in 1988 when we purchased two
Bullmastiffs, Volontaire Challenge and Volontaire Amazon.
Both these dogs attained their Australian Champion titles easily and
Amazon was the first Bullmastiff to receive a Best in Group in the
Sydney metropolitan area (Blacktown ABKC). These two dogs gave us a
lot of pleasure, and from them, we learnt what we needed to improve
the breed.
We searched and went to
every show possible both here in NSW as well as Victoria and found a
suitable mate for Amazon. This was to be the best decision we could
make as we produced an extremely fine litter. The dog we chose was
the product of a mating between two magnificent imports, Aust Ch
Oldwell Laird (Imp UK) and Aust Ch Rose Queen of Colom (Imp
UK). We kept two of their offspring, Powerbulmas Adona and
Powerbulmas Abu. This was the start of Powerbulmas Kennels and from
there, we went from strength to strength (with a lot of heartache in
between). These 2 kids titled very quickly and both won speciality
shows here and interstate.
Paul whilst on one of his
visits home to Malta, decided to take a side trip to Wales and look up
our old friends, the Frowens (Pryderi Kennels) who had moved back to
Wales. Well, he spent the next three weeks visiting every imaginable
kennel possible in the UK and was fortunate in obtaining three lots of
semen from Oldwell Wayne, Eng Ch Graecia Mercury and Eng Ch Saturn
of Graecia.
The next import to arrive
at Powerbulmas, with thanks to the Frowens, was our pride and joy Aust
Ch Graecia Araminta. She was a vision, I cried when I saw
her. She was titled with just 5 certificates, which to this day, has
never been done again by a Bullmastiff. There was no stopping us now,
we were on a mission to bring in as much to the gene pool as possible
to Australia, and this was the start of many a financial and
bureaucratic problem, but we got through it in the end.
Then, along came Billy,
Aust Ch Bournevalley Buffalo Bill (Imp UK) who, as far as we are
concerned, has done a lot for the breed here in this country with his
superb temperament and soundness.
We also used in our
breeding program, very successfully, Aust Ch Morvern Eachen (Imp UK)
(John Klok Bruin Kennels). A mating between his son, Aust Ch Bruin
Gladiator (Willy) and a Ch Powerbulmas Abu daughter, produced
Australian Grand Champion Powerbulmas Pezaz Obargo (Pezaz), the
first dog to obtain the honour of Grand Champion.
Pezaz
has done wonders for the breed and he was proven to be the Best
Brindle in all states. He has won 3 specialities, 5 Runner-up in
shows at All Breeds level, 19 Best Exhibits in Group and numerous
runner-up and in-group placing’s. Pezaz is loved by everyone and has
probably been the best ambassador for the Bullmastiff Breed, Australia
wide.
Simasana (English and
Australian Champion Pryderi Simasana (Imp UK)
arrived next, and
what can we say except that we were once again gifted in having such a
wonderful specimen sent to us. Still they keep coming, along comes
the clown of the family Gwyn, Aust Ch Pryderi Glyndwr (Imp UK)
from Wales and this dog has given us and the breed, the head that we
all needed, and has done so in many of he’s progeny. Billy Brittle,
when judging in Victoria said in he’s critique that this dog will have
much to offer the breed in Australia.
Oh Yes then we receive
another, her name is Gardavie Starlight (Imp UK). Not the
biggest of girls, but none the less her back ground and gene pool is
what we needed and we now have puppies on the ground by her and Wayne
(Oldwell Semen Boy) of which we will keep 3 to show.
Just recently we achieved
another milestone for our Kennel, importing a dog a Aust Ch Oldwell
Blake (Imp UK) and his sister, Oldwell Norton (Imp UK). They now
have Champion progeny themselves.
As for me, I gained my judges licence (2003) to do the
entire of the Utility Group. This has been a dream come true for me
as I just love the dogs and want to give something back to the dog
world.
I have judged at Open Shows, at All Breeds Championship
shows both here in Australia and New Zealand, the Siberian Club of NSW
and the Utility Dog Club of Victoria.
My involvement in this
industry is very committed and I belong to several Clubs:-
The Bullmastiff Club of NSW
Secretary since its beginning in 1989 until 2005 and a life member of
the Club.
The Bullmastiff Club of QLD
Liverpool All Breeds Club since 1996 (vice president current)

(committee current) Southern Highlands All Breeds and Obedience Club
since 1999 (committee current)
I am also a very avid
steward and do so at many All Breed shows as well as speciality club
shows.
I gained my Toy licence in
2007.
All in all we are very
proud of our kennel and our commitment to the Bullmastiff.
To date we have either bred
and or made up over 60 Champions since 1988. We have Champions in
Australia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, New Zealand and we have
recently imported into the Netherlands. |
